Privacy policy
What we collect, why we collect it, who can see it, and the choices you have.
Last updated October 20, 2026. This policy covers The Locality Network's website and membership, in every chapter.
What we collect
- Your account: your name, email address, mobile number and password. We store a one-way hash of your password, never the password itself.
- Your profile: your title, company and state and, once you're a member, anything else you add: a photo, a short bio, what you can help with and what you're looking for.
- Your application: your answers, your LinkedIn address, and your consent to be contacted by phone or text, with the time you gave it. After your call, our team records notes and assessments that only staff see.
- Your membership: your membership level, its status and its dates. Payments are handled by Stripe or PayPal; we keep their references to your subscription, never your card or bank details.
- What you do in the network: your RSVPs and check-ins, the guests you bring (their names and email addresses), your circles, your posts, and your messages and message requests.
- Security details: for each device you log in on, the time, its IP address and its browser, which you can see and sign out of under Account › Devices.
How we use it
- To run the network: your profile, the directory, messages, events, circles and introductions.
- To review applications, and to make and manage membership offers.
- To take payments and send renewal reminders.
- To email you about your account, your application, your events and your messages, and to send the weekly digest, which you can turn off at any time.
- To text you a verification code, and to call or text you about your application if you've agreed to that.
- To keep accounts secure and to stop abuse.
We don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising.
Who can see it
- Other members see your profile inside the network, after logging in, and only as much as your privacy setting allows: your full profile, only your name and role, or nothing at all.
- The public sees members' name, title, company and state, and the photo of members whose profile is Visible, in their chapter's member directory and on a public profile page that search engines, image search included, may show, and the same details appear in the preview when someone shares a link to that page. Nothing else about you is ever public: not your bio, what you can help with or are looking for, your contact details or your activity. You can turn your public profile off in your account at any time; it disappears from our site straight away, though search engines, and sites where a link to it was shared, may take a few weeks to drop it. Free accounts and members set to Ghost are never public.
- Events: our team may show a chapter event on the website, with its name, time and description, and its venue only when that's safe to share. Who's going, who's on the waitlist and who your guests are is never public. Circles' events are never public.
- Our staff see what they need to review applications and run the network. Every time staff view or change a member's information, it's logged.
- Your guests receive your name in their invitation, and nothing else about you.
Who we work with
We use a small number of companies to provide the service. Each one receives only what it needs:
- Stripe and PayPal, to take payments.
- Twilio, to send verification codes by text.
- Our email provider, to deliver email.
- DigitalOcean, which hosts the website, its database and member photos.
We may also share information when the law requires it.
Cookies
We use only the cookies needed to keep you logged in and your session secure. There are no advertising or tracking cookies, and no third-party analytics.
Your choices
- Change your profile and your privacy setting at any time in your account.
- Turn the weekly digest off in your account, or from the link in any digest.
- Withdraw your consent to calls and texts about your application.
- Ask for a copy of your information, or ask us to correct or delete it.
For any of these, or any question about this policy, contact our membership team.
Keeping it safe
Everything is sent over encrypted connections. Passwords are stored as one-way hashes, two-factor login is available to every member and required for staff, and payment keys are stored encrypted.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your profile and your activity, except what we must keep by law, such as records of payments.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell members by email before it takes effect.
